Letter to the Editor: We have an opportunity to elect a true stateswoman to House of Delegates

LETTER TO THE EDITOR by Susie and Henry Fowler

Voters in District 29A have an opportunity to elect a true stateswoman as their state delegate in Annapolis on Nov. 6.

Democrat Roberta “Robbie” Loker has a demonstrated talent for bringing people together to solve complex problems. Her years spent managing programs to strengthen families and individuals in St. Mary’s, Charles and Prince George’s counties’ departments of social services provided keen insight into the cumbersome bureaucracy of Maryland government.

Working in the mortgage industry, she sees firsthand the struggles families face to achieve and maintain home ownership. She has served as president of several nonprofit boards of directors in St. Mary’s County. She was instrumental in leading the St. Mary’s Hospital board through the transition to become MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. She has spent her life serving the community both in professional and charitable roles and improving our community.

Our governor has achieved success by reaching across the aisle in Annapolis. Some of our local representatives have not followed his model, however, which is a disservice to the citizens of St. Mary’s County. Robbie recognizes the importance of bipartisanship in order to solve the complex problems that face our county and state.

Her vast experience, ability to listen and work productively and positively with others will benefit the citizens of District 29A when she is our delegate. Vote for Robbie Loker on Nov. 6.

Loker Sails Log Canoe to Blessing of the Fleet

Maryland Delegate District 29A Candidate Robbie Loker sailed into St. Mary’s County’s 2018 Blessing of the Fleet aboard what is surely the first Tilghman-style Chesapeake Bay sailing log canoe built this century. Well, technically, the Eve was trailered through the parade.

“I was so proud to have an opportunity to attend such a historical event on the brand new Eve,” Ms. Loker said. “I really appreciate that Johnny Cook would give me such an honor.”
The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities, local priest and pastors blessed the working boats to ensure a safe and bountiful season. In St. Mary’s, the tradition began in the 7th District, what Ms. Loker calls “one of the cherished waterfront communities in my district.”

The local Blessing of the Fleet has been held at St. Clement’s Island since 1934 when a large white cross was erected on the island. Since 1967, the celebration has been conducted by the 7th District Optimist Club.

Loker Seeks More for the 600 Farmers in St. Mary’s County

Candidate for the seat of Delegate for 29A, Robbie Loker pledges to work for the farmers in St. Mary’s County and farmers throughout the state, in her video shout-out to the 72nd St. Mary’s County Fair held last weekend. The St. Mary’s County Fair has been held in various forms since 1912 to showcase what remains a pillar industry of Southern Maryland. Leonardtown High School students compiled the History of St. Mary’s County Fair, detailing the importance of agriculture in St. Mary’s County.
